Events throughout the year in and around the Peak District

Ashbourne Royal Shrovetide

The historical game is played on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday every year. Two teams the Up’Ards and the Down’Ards, based on which side of the river you were born, play “football” across the town usually carrying the ball in a giant scrum, whilst trying to get to one of the goals set 3 miles apart. The ball is turned up at 2pm each day from the Shaw Croft car park in the centre of town. Parking in the town centre is not advisable!

Well Dressings

The traditional art of well dressing is only really seen in around Derbyshire and most notably in the village of Tissington just 3 miles down the road from New Hanson Shepherd's Hut. The ancient custom of decorating the wells is thought to have originated in pagan times although many link the practice to the time of the Black Death. In villages such as Tissington the survival of its inhabitants was linked to the purity of the water supply and the wells have been decorated in thanks ever since.

Well dressings occur throughout Spring and Summer full listings can be found here. At Tissington the 6 wells are decorated for Ascension day, usually around May, every year and remain for the following week.

Bakewell Show

Held at the Bakewell showground the Bakewell show is one of the oldest agricultural shows in the country, although these days the focus is not just on agriculture with food halls, trade stands and main ring attractions. The show is always held on the first Wednesday and Thursday in August.
